Power disconnect

In general, an electric power system is very complex, where a system requires a form of switching equipment in order to control efficiently in a transmission network in an emergency or normal situation.

BCB Scheme

The basic construction for a power breaker needs to be separated from two different contacts in an insulating fluid which has 2 functions, namely:

Extinguishing the arc that occurs between the two contacts when the breaker "opens"
Provides adequate isolation between these two contacts and against ground
Many types of fluid can be used as a power breaker, the most commonly used types as a power breaker are:

1. Air at atmospheric pressure
2. Compressed air
3. Oil that produces hydrogen to extinguish arcs
4. Very high standard
5. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6)

As for the gases that are considered as power cutters are:

Simple gases (oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide)
The electronegative gases are SF6, Areton

The properties required in the use of a power breaker are:
  • High dielectric strength
  • Thermal stability
  • Don't burn
  • High thermal conductivity because it is very useful to cool the conductors in the gas and help in the fire fighting process
  • Ability to extinguish arcs
  • Economical

When viewed from the properties required in power cut, it can be said that the type that is very good to use is to use SF6 gas because this is because sulfur hexafluoride has better dielectric strength than other types. Even though SF6 is a gas, it can thawed at moderate pressure and stored in steel bottles.

Although SF6 has better insulation and arc suppression properties than other types, it has the disadvantage that it cannot be used above 14 atm unless the gas is heated to avoid liquefaction.
